Empowering teachers and students for a brighter future.

One By One Makes A Bundle

Kamukamu is a Ugandan tribal proverb meaning “One by one makes a bundle.”  It is our belief that helping to enhance education in Uganda requires educating one child and working with one community at a time. Our organization works with local and national leaders, and with local communities in Uganda to promote quality education in both primary and secondary public schools.

Kamukamu Learning Foundation (Kamukamu), is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of quality education in underprivileged schools in Uganda.  Kamukamu is a registered tax exempt public charity.

Education in Uganda

Education in Uganda is competitive. Only the “best and brightest” students are chosen to promote from primary to secondary school. Public schools in rural areas are often at a disadvantage due to overcrowded classrooms, a shortage of teachers, inadequate learning materials, and limited access to clean water. Kamukamu works to ensure all students have access to continued education opportunities by helping rural schools address these specific challenges.

Stephen’s Story

The idea for Kamukamu first came to Board President Stephen Ssemaala over ten years ago, following his arrival in America from his homeland in Uganda.  Stephen appreciated the educational opportunities America offered to him and his children, and he was looking for ways to expand such opportunity for the children of his native country.  After he finished his college education and graduated from law school, Stephen formed Kamukamu in 2009 with the help of several American friends in Washington State. The name Kamukamu Learning Foundation was chosen to reflect the task and method for achieving success.

Kamukamu’s Work

To date, Kamukamu has invested over $115,000 into a number of projects that have increased educational opportunities for students attending schools in rural areas. These projects range from purchasing school supplies, installing water filters to gain access to clean water, to building classrooms and dormitories. All these projects are financed through donations made by our generous supporters. Kamukamu holds small fundraising events throughout the calendar year, hosts a Benefit Auction every other year, and accepts donations of any size year-round. If you are interested in learning more about the projects our donors sponsor, please visit our Completed Projects page. If you would like to donate to future projects, please visit our Donate page.
